Orange Pinot Noir 2019

Neck of the Woods:
Bannockburn, Central Otago.

The pinot gris grapes were hand harvested on the 12th of April and fermented in a 1500 litre open top fermenter with approximately 25% whole bunches and the rest destemmed.  Minimal cap management was done with one foot plunge per day during ferment and a gentle cap wet as needed thereafter.

The wine was pressed in a small basket press when the tannins were in harmony with the other layers in the wine.

The total time on skins was 26 days.   The wine was aged in neutral pinot noir barrels and underwent a complete malolactic fermentation.   This

wine was bottled without fining and filtration in February 2020.

    Tasting Notes

The wine has a crystal clear hue with a gorgeous blackboy peach / crabapple colour. The nose is immediately spicey with nutmeg, cardamon, and almond followed by mandarin zest, a hint of peach/nectarine and cherry blossom. There is captivating stone fruit on the palate with freshly squeezed citrus, melon, tamarind and sweet cherry. The palate is intricately woven with fine tannin derived from the skin/stalk fermentation and apt acidity from a cooler growing season. This is a particularly fun wine to experiment with serving temperatures. When served directly out of the fridge, the fruit and acidity will be elevated. When naturally warmed to room temperature, the spice and tannin will shine through. Intriguing as a young wine with numerous food pairing options, this wine will continue to develop for 10+ years if stored properly with particular care to keep out of light.

Bisexual Nun Julie d’Aubigny (La Maupin) Powerful Soprano, Lethal Sword Fighter

We’re inspired by pioneers. By those who aren’t afraid to take risks and do things differently. Who stay true to what they believe. And we dedicate every one of our vintages to a groundbreaking, rule-defying character that followed their passion and forged their own path.

Julie d’Aubigny never played by the rules. She stopped at nothing to get what she wanted. And the serial seductress cut through eighteenth century French limitations one bloody sword fight at a time.

Born in Provence to a wealthy family, Julie had everything handed to her. But it was never enough. She craved action and adventure and her life was a series of one wild exchange after another. She challenged strangers to swordfights in exchange for money. Became the star attraction of the Paris Opera. And then there was that time she took the Holy Orders so she could sneak into a convent, burn it down, and kidnap her female lover only to leave her a few weeks later.

Our Orange wine pays homage to this swashbuckling, opera singing, bisexual nun from Provence. Like her, you can’t put us in a box. We reject tradition and go our own way.
